Washington, D.C.-- U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel and former U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey are being honored in plans for a facility that will assist the families of wounded warriors, according to John D. Folsom, founder and president of Wounded Warriors , a Nebraska non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization. Folsom will announce construction plans for the Wounded Warriors Retreat at a press conference scheduled for 9:30 a.m. (EDT) on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, in the Caucus Room of the Russell Senate Office Building. A key feature of the retreat will be the Hagel-Kerrey Lodge. The lodge will honor the Nebraska senators for their distinguished military service as well as their service to veterans, both in the public and private sectors. Kerrey and Hagel are expected to attend the event and make remarks, as is Brig. Gen. Thomas M. Murray, USMC. The retreat will be built on 80 acres of pine-studded hills in the northwest corner of Nebraska, near Crawford. The retreat will provide a family-friendly environment, where military families most affected by war can rebuild relationships and enjoy a vacation getaway to help ease the pain caused by wounds, injury or death. Eligible families will be given a free, week long stay at the facility, which will include family cabins, a swimming pool, horseback riding, hiking, fishing and tours to nearby attractions, such as Fort Robinson State Park and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. Another key building on the retreat grounds will be the Dunham Chapel. The chapel is being named for Corporal Jason L. Dunham USMC, of Scio, N.Y., who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the fighting in Iraq. He was the first Marine to receive our nation's highest honor in almost 30 years. The retreat will serve as a monument to our military families and as a tribute to the sacrifice and hardships they endure when our nation goes to war. As our motto states: "When America goes to war, our families go to war." These families will be honored by a life size statue which will be placed at the retreat. Commissioned by Wounded Warriors, the statue will depict a family reunited after a long, dangerous, deployment overseas. The sculptor is Nebraska native Matthew Placzek. The estimated cost of construction for the retreat is $5 million. Ground breaking is anticipated in spring 2008. The Hagel-Kerrey Lodge is being designed by Ivan Vrtiska of Vrtiska Architectural Associates of Omaha, Neb. Wounded Warriors will work in conjunction with the University of Nebraska School of Architecture to design the Dunham Chapel. Wounded Warriors currently provides stays at its two resort properties for families of service members who were wounded, injured or killed in combat operations. These condo units are in the Orlando, Fla., area and Galveston, Texas. Wounded Warriors was founded in March, 2003 by John D. Folsom, a Marine Reserve colonel. Wounded Warriors
